This precision robotic cell is engineered to automate and verify the placement of lyophilised beads into dual-chamber cartridges. The process begins with cartridge ID verification and electrostatic discharge (ESD) neutralization. The system then accurately dispenses one lyophilised bead into each cartridge chamber avoiding cross contamination, using laser systems to confirm placement after each step. A final colour-based inspection ensures both beads are correctly seated and fully present, reducing human error and ensuring traceability in regulated environments.
To ensure operator safety, the system is equipped with integrated light gates that immediately halt operation if the sensing field is interrupted. These light curtains provide a non-contact safety barrier, preventing accidental access to moving components during operation. In addition, all access doors are fitted with safety interlocks that automatically stop the machine if opened during a cycle, ensuring full compliance with industrial safety standards and supporting safe, hands-on maintenance procedures. To further reduce risk, the system is configured to actuate only after the operator has removed their hands from the working area and simultaneously pressed two start buttons - ensuring intentional, two-handed activation of each cycle.
The system is operated via a Siemens HMI, providing two levels of access: Operator and Administrator. While Operators are limited to essential functions for running the process safely and efficiently, Administrators have access to advanced settings such as actuation speed, wait times, and process delays - enabling fine-tuning of system performance. Peripheral devices such as the vision systems are programmed independently to ensure modular control and flexibility. All system components are connected through a dedicated external enclosure that manages power and signal cabling, allowing the main unit to maintain a compact footprint suitable for standard laboratory workbenches as shallow as 700 mm.
Access doors on the opposite side of the system provide the operator with a safe and convenient way to load new lyophilised bead formulations as needed. These doors are essential for routine operation and material changeovers, allowing quick access to internal components without compromising safety. Each door is equipped with interlock sensors to ensure the system remains inactive while open, preventing accidental actuation during loading. This design supports efficient, repeatable workflows while maintaining full operator protection throughout the process.
The device is enclosed with clear polycarbonate safety panels, providing full visibility of internal operations without compromising operator protection. These high-impact-resistant panels allow users to safely observe each stage of the process in real time, supporting both monitoring and troubleshooting. By combining transparency with proven mechanical strength, the enclosure ensures a safe working environment while maintaining clear line-of-sight to critical components and movements.
